Challenging street harassment of women and girls

We’re working alongside behaviour change experts Social Engine on a new multi-year initiative to tackle violence against women and girls in the London Borough of Redbridge.

Too many women’s safety campaigns have focused on women’s behaviours, but this wide-ranging behaviour change initiative puts the focus squarely on men, the primary perpetrators of sexist violence.

Redbridge is ‘No place for abuse’

The goal of This Has To Stop, which is led and championed by Redbridge Council, is to make the borough ‘no place for abuse’ and to create a generational shift in social norms around harassment and violence of women.

Redbridge was the first borough to issue a fine for street harassment, so the first round information campaign has been taking place against a background of increased enforcement.

Working with the Social Engine team, we developed the new name and core copy for the initiative anc created the clean and punchy graphic style that defines its visual components.

Street posters, digital screens, social media and a press campaign will be supported by work in schools and community centres, encouraging boys and men to engage with the conversation and commit to zero tolerance of sexist harassment and violence.

The campaign has been covered by both print and broadcast media. Here’s a good overview of the initiative by The Evening Standard.
